Every year, during the 1st of May, the “Festival of the snake catchers” (Festa dei serpari) is held in Cocullo.
This festival, in honor of St. Dominic, has roots in pagan rites and beliefs linked to the Roman goddess Angitia.
After the mass, the St. Dominic statue, draped with living snakes caught during the end of March, is brought outside through the streets of the town, followed by the snake charmers, also carrying snakes.
